As I grew older, my reading tastes expanded to other fiction genres, non-fiction and the classics, but somehow a romance novel always managed to make it into my shopping cart along with other book purchases.

When the itch to tell stories of my own surfaced, it made sense that I’d write what I enjoyed the most…romances. And so I did, loving every minute of it. Then several years ago, while beta reading the next book in a YA author friend’s continuing series, I was instantly hooked! As I read, I remember thinking, “This is gritty and soul-wrenching and…I love it! Where were YA books like this when I was growing up?” Of course, my friend’s amazing talent and accessible literary style had sucked me in, but she’d also written a darn good story!

After that, I proceeded to devour YA books left and right. The more I read, the more intrigued I became. I wanted to write some stories about first love, about having to make tough decisions in unusual and sometimes not-so-pretty situations. AND the best part was, I could still write about irresistible guys and the blush of excitement in getting to spend time with them.

BUT, if I was going to write YA, my first one couldn’t just be any story. It had to be the right story. Brightest Kind of Darkness wasn’t the first young adult story I wrote, but it was the first one that grabbed onto me and wouldn’t let go until I finished that first book and had already written a fourteen page outline of book two. When I finished the book, I polished it, then I rewrote it…more than once.  In writing this first book in my Brightest Kind of Darkness series, I got to do what I loved all over again, write a story full of mystery and adventure…and about falling in love.

I love writing stories from an adult point-of-view and will continue to do so, but some stories need to be told from another perspective, one that views life, not from the microscope of past experience, but from a wide angle, gotta-take-it-all-in-for-the-first-time-right-here-right-now lens.

If you like dark paranormal romances, I hope you’ll give Brightest Kind of Darkness a try.

“’Bout damned time!” Callen thought as he surveyed the latest tourists arriving in Wilder with a predatory gaze. As their numbers grew, a sense of calm settled over him, relaxing his tense back and shoulder muscles. Everything would be fine. His men were used to shoring up during the harsher winter months, but the early season blizzard that blew through the small Colorado town a few weeks ago surprised them all. The storm came in mild enough, allowing the current tourists to leave, but then it turned into a full on whiteout, keeping new tourists from arriving.

He’d spent the last three weeks listening to the guys grumble. Twenty-one days watching their eyes glaze over every time he told them relief was days away. Five hundred and four hours dealing with flaring tempers and an increasingly hungrier edge. The fact that a rare triple eclipse was already two-thirds completed only exacerbated their intemperate moods. The evening could not get here soon enough. For all of them.

Folding his arms, Callen leaned against Bill Fadden’s thirty-year-old truck outside of Wilder’s sheriff’s office and welcomed the late afternoon sun finally breaking through the clouds. The milder weather heralded in several groups of women for a “girls weekend”, a horde of people carting paraphernalia for some Halloween conference, and various sets of men carting ice-climbing and skiing gear atop their trucks and SUVs.

Thirty or so families had poured in at the crack of dawn, but Callen was only interested in the late-arriving tourists—the singles, who usually partied all weekend long. Spilling out of their cars, they took off in different directions up and down Main Street for their respective hotels. A few stragglers would arrive later in the evening, but this was the bulk of Wilder’s visitors for the next few days.

“’Folks’re showing up later and later nowadays,” a gravely voice said from behind him.

Callen turned and nodded to the thin-framed, silver-haired man who stood in the doorway of the sheriff’s office sucking at his teeth as if removing a piece of stuck food. When a burst of crisp Colorado wind ruffled his black jacket, Bill zipped the coat closed over his shiny silver badge and pinned Callen with a guarded stare. “Your boys going to be up to their jobs tonight?”

Callen’s jaw muscle jumped in annoyance. “Got it covered.”

“They’ve all seemed a little surly of late,” Bill paused and adjusted his gun’s belt that always weighed his black pants down, then continued, “’specially Nevan and Elam. Saw ‘em beating the hell out of each other behind Snookers last night.”

The sheriff knew his men’s rotations as well as he did. Callen’s ire spiked and for a brief second he focused on the truck’s antenna, willing it to snap in front of Bill; a reminder he could still rip the man in half with his bare hands if he wanted. When the metal dipped slightly at the top, manipulated by the gusty wind blowing through the San Juan mountains, Callen held back a growl of frustration—he’d never stop trying to regain his mental powers. Laying his hand on the truck’s hood in a casual stance, he replied in a controlled tone, “Nevan and Elam have waited the longest.”

Bill shrugged his bony shoulders. “All I’m sayin is…they’d better go easy. Don’t want any problems on my hands.”

“We’ve been guarding a long time.” Callen thrummed his fingers on the metal surface to keep from pounding a huge dent.  Longer than any of us care to remember.

Ignoring Callen’s warning tone, Bill tilted his head and squinted. “Guardians. Yeah. I like the sound of that. Maybe that’s what we should call your—”

“Whilst!” Callen’s growled dismissal cut him off. Every few years, Bill tried to come up with some name to call them, but Callen’s clan refused to be labeled. To them, labels meant organization, organization sounded like community, and community led to permanency. They weren’t interested.  God forbid the sheriff whispered Guardians as a suggestion to his men. That’s the last thing Callen needed. In the agitated state they were in, they’d tear Bill’s head from his shoulders. “It’d be in yer best interest to keep that suggestion to yerself.”

Apprehension flashed in Bill’s watery blue eyes before he masked it behind an authoritative gaze. “Is that some kind of threat?”

Callen stared until the old man looked away, then he said, “There won’t be any problems tonight.”

“Good to hear,” Bill grunted. Turning, he headed toward his wife’s teahouse on 7^th avenue (like he did everyday for a late afternoon snack), then called over his shoulder, “’Cause I’d sure like to win that ‘lowest crime rate in Colorado’ award again this year.”

Curling his upper lip, Callen gripped the truck’s hood until his fingers left an impression in the metal. Why did Bill always feel the need to push his buttons? Because of Callen’s clan, Wilder’s sheriff’s department—comprised of Bill, his son Bruce, Bruce’s son, Jerry and Jerry’s best friend, David—hadn’t had to deal with anything more dangerous than petty theft for almost a century.
