I think I had one of the “traditional” experiences (often mentioned in books) but in reality it’s oh-so-scary!
I came home from the gym at night. Well, it wasn’t actually “at night”, it was shortly before nine, but it was winter so it was already as dark as at midnight. I live in a village where at night only the main road is “alive”, the rest is stone dead. I was walking on one of the “rest” roads.
Actually, I’m not a fearful person, but when you’re walking in the dark, alone, without so much as a noise or a lantern here and there as your only light, you begin to think about what you would do when suddenly someone came jumping out of the bushes and tried to murder you.
It wasn’t THAT what happened to me, thank god, but, suddenly, I heard footsteps behind me. First I thought well, why should you be walking here alone, someone could very well have decided to go for an evening walk just yet. But the footsteps wouldn’t stop. They began to make me nervous and I walked faster.
The footsteps became faster, too.
I didn’t dare turn around to look so I stopped and pretended that my shoe lace was untied and that I had to fasten it again so that the footstep maker could pass me and I would see who it was.
But as I knelt there, nobody passed me. In fact, the footsteps had ceased entirely. Slowly, slowly I turned around and saw…
…nobody.
I was shocked. And panicked. I practically raced home and locked the door behind me.
You read about that so often, but you can’t imagine what it is like in real life!
*shudder*
Happy Halloween, y’all!

When I lived in New Brunswick, I lived in a small house above the bay. It was a nice house, beautiful view of the bay and you could hike down the treacherous hill to a private beach. Only 3 houses on the street, and during the winter you could see tons of different animal tracks through the yard. Loved it.
Until you got in the basement. That basement had the worst feeling I have ever felt. It instantly put you on edge, and had you looking around at the shadows. I was always seeing things in my peripheral vision. It felt ominous, and even my now husband despised it. But of course, he could have been saying that to get out of laundry detail
I always thought there was something just waiting there, but never felt it anywhere else in the house. I was glad when we moved.
Happy Halloween… may we all find a werewolf of our very own today

I have a dream that comes back to me especially when I am very tired. I am at my parents house on the farem. It is dark, no moonlight. There is something trying to get in and I Race around, at each door and window, shutting, locking, barracading each opening , just before whoever or whatever tries to get in that way! I have the sense that it has happened to me before, and that I know what will happen next, but I still need to do everything the same way, just a if I’m following a script. I finally have the whole house locked down and then something else happens, which takes me to another situation… and then I wake up!! Talk about Groundhog day moment! Then I get up and read awhile and get a drink.

The house I lived in before this one lights would turn on by themselves things would be in different spot. Would ask my husband and he hadn’t moved the items. Then when we were decorating the tree some of the ornaments started moving like someone was looking at them, looked at my husband and he was watching them so we both saw it happen.

A few years ago when I was visiting my cousin in Fredericksburg, VA, we went for hot chocolate at the coffee place in the old town area. On our way to the restaurant, we had passed the old Confederate cemetery and my cousin mentioned how haunted the area is by all of the Civil War soldiers who died there.
So, as we were sitting down and enjoying our hot chocolate, she started telling me a story about a tea room there that is haunted. She and her mother had heard about the ghost there who is supposed to leave scratch marks on the backs of customers and they decided to test it. As they were enjoying their tea, my cousin told me she felt the air around them get cold and it felt like someone was standing close to her and touching her back - with nobody anywhere near their table. Later that night, as my cousin was getting ready for bed, she glanced in the mirror and noticed bright red scratches on her back that looked like someone had raked their nails down her back.
When she finished that story, I definitely felt a shiver run down my spine and I asked her if there was a way to get back to her house without going by the cemetery.

Nothing to spectacular but…
My entire family went to England and Scotland about 11 years ago and while were there had a renewal of vows ceremony for my sister and brother-in-law. We had a great time.
While we were in Scotland I went looking for something with the Burns tartan (the Burns’ were a sept of the Campbell clan - you can find their tartan everywhere) which is my paternal grandmother’s clan. Anyway I finally found a key chain in a store. When I picked it up it kind of gave me the willies but I bought it anyway. I didn’t touch it again until I got back to the States and then every time I did my arm started tingling and I just felt this kind of malevolent feeling. I finally gave it to my brother and asked him if he felt anything. He didn’t feel a thing. He’s now the proud owner of the keychain.
Have a very happy Halloween!

Nothing to scary or malicious, but it spooked me a bit at first. My dad died almost a year ago and shortly after he passed I was watching some awards show, the kind that has an in memory photo montage. Well I was sitting on the couch thinking how if my dad was a movie star he would have a photo here and everyone would know how sad I was when suddenly… crash! I jumped up and ran into the hall to find that these rubber duckies I have in the bathroom had fallen off my mirror. The next day I was telling my best friend about the ducks when… crash! A picture shot off the wall. I’m going to guess that my dad is trying to be funny, even from the grave. This is the guy that played the Friday the 13th music outside my window when I was a kid, just to see me run in terror! He was always joking like that and I’m just hoping nothing falls off the wall as I’m typing

Happy Halloween!!!
One of my neighbours asked me to house-sit for them and take care of their 2 cats, dog and assorted fish. Normally, this is cool for me. I have done this for them a bunch of other times and had no difficulties. However, the one time that I had difficulties was when I had returned to their house after dark. I forgot to leave some lights on for me. That shook me a little. I watched a little television and decided around 10 to go to bed. I had a big stack of books I wanted to read.
I got myself cozy in the guestroom, reading my books. However, around 12 am I became overly anxious and kept thinking I was hearing things in the room. I pushed the covers off of me and fled the guestroom. I decided to go home around 3 am. I couldn’t handle whatever was creeping me out in my neighbour’s house. I did go back only during the day to take care of the animals. I couldn’t make myself stay there during the night.
A year later I was asked to house-sit again. This time I was able to sleep in the guestroom without complaint.

These are so great! I’ve really enjoyed reading everyone’s shiver worthy stories.
Lisa…so…do you bring a flashlight now?
Eleanor, I hope you have a great Thanksgiving, too.
KimP, Oy! Many people talk about a “feeling” they get when in certain houses…especially specific areas. This is WHY I didn’t stay in the tower of a castle we stayed in while visiting Ireland. We had the pick of the rooms and could’ve stayed in the tower, but something just felt “off” to me. I found out the next day that the tower was the only “original” part of the castle. All the other aspects of the castle had been renovated. And yes, two people supposedly died there.
Gina, I definitely think our imagination plays a HUGE part in shiver-worthy moments.
Sharon, that has got to be ONE frustrating and frightening recurring dream. Do you ever recognize that you’re dreaming and try to change the outcome?
Lisa, that’s spookily cute…the ghost was curious about the ornaments.
Karin, that’s shiver-worthy for sure. I think I’d want to avoid that cemetary too.
Tracy, I say we should always follow our gut on things…though I’m sure you were curious as to why the key chain affected you that way, weren’t you?
Barbara, I’m enjoying reading them too!
Anna D, I hope nothing crashed while you were typing!
Carolyn, hmmm…makes you wonder why that particular room bothered you that night and not later?
I hope everyone had a Happy Halloween! I’ll be announcing a winner tomorrow morning!

Never had a shiver moment. I did have a deja vu moment once, taken to a an old house made into a restaurant with many rooms, knowing what the lobby and rooms looked like before I entered each, no shivers, just a curiosity about it after.

Congrats Anna!
Yes Patrice, it’s been years and I still think about that keychain from time to time. I try and call myself all kinds of silly but when I really think about it, it was freaky! Was it something to do with the Burns clan/tartan in general? Was it someone who had touched the keychain before me? Was it the person who was helping to make the keychain? hmmmm…I’ll never know.
Fun post!

Congratulations, Anna!
Patrice, I know what you mean about places in Ireland having an ‘off’ feeling. When my parents and I went to Ireland 4 years ago, we made a stop at the St. James Fort in Kinsale. While there we were told about the ghost who is supposed to haunt it. Later, when I was walking along the wall, there was a certain section where something felt not quite right. When I asked one of the people working there about it, I was told that is the section where the ghost supposedly died.

Hi Pam P! I’ve had deja vu moments like that, too!
Tracy, LOL…I’d always wonder, too.
Karin, intuition is a powerful thing at times.
