Many authors talk about listening to music while they write. I truly wish I could do that. Oh, the distractions and noise I could drown out! But because I perceive music as another form of storytelling, I get too caught up in the lyrics and the mini-story the artist is trying to tell (even movie scores make me think of the film they’re from!), so I find listening to music while I write distracting. I do however listen to music every chance I get otherwise. Not only is it uplifting, but thought provoking, and sometimes songs have inspired a scene or even a storyline. Other times, I’ll hear a song after I’ve written a novel that seems to follow parts of my storyline so well, I can’t help but associate it with my story in my mind.
