My thoughts on the LOST finale!
On to more serious subjects…ahem.
I FINALLY hibernated for 3 hours …er…got to sit down and watch LOST (with the RT conference and other travels I’d missed the next to the last episode as well as the season finale. I love TiVo! *g*).
Okay, after watching all three hours (Man, that’s the way to go…back to back! What can I say, I’m so addicted!) I’m STILL sticking with my originalTHEORY (it’s halfway down the post) as to what’s going on with this TV show.
**SPOILER alert for those who haven’t seen it yet ** (which makes me wonder WHY THE HECK HAVEN’T YOU! LOL!)
These last episodes seemed to focus on Michael and his “guilt” over the murders he’d commited to save his son as well as Desmond– with flash backs to Desmond’s past and how he came to cross paths with Jack and Lock when the Lock first discovered the hatch.
Right now we don’t know if Desmond is dead but considering the HUGE white light and horrific sound that flew over the island as well as the big hatch door that landed way far away from the hatch…one might be inclined to think he didn’t make it out. We “could” still be surprised, but Desmond dying keeps my theory alive…at least until next season starts and the writers throw a wrench in my best laid plans. ;) Remember, Desmond was about to kill himself when he discovered the love letter from Penny that encouraged him to “go on”, to never give up. Then Lock banging on the hatch got him moving again and out of his suicidal mode. But by the end of the season finale, Desmond was the one who took out the “key” and used it to blow up the hatch, presumbably to save everyone. SEE, for once, Desmond didn’t run. He finally accomplished his goal–regaining his “honor”. Hence, he resolved his issue and what happens when the people on the island resolve their issues? They DIE! (and by my theory, they wake up from the matrix-like environment that had been created by the Dharma institute to help them overcome their problem). So my theory lives on! LOL! Now, I’ll admit that the last bit about Penny’s men calling her from their “artic” location kind of threw me, which I think was the writers’ whole point to that scene. So what does that last scene mean? That Desmond didn’t die? Why bring Penny into the picture at this point if Desmond is gone for good…Oy, it’s a kicker all right. If Desmond, by some miracle, didn’t die, then we still haven’t learned enough about his past to discover his “deeper” issue that still needs to be resolved.
Back to other aspects of the last couple of episodes. At first, from a writer’s perspective, the whole scene with Ecko and Michael cleaning the blood off the floor bugged me because the story that Ecko told Michael about the boy who asked Ecko (as a priest) about his sin of kicking a dog for biting his sister was just WAY too convenient. Nothing that Michael had said at that point would have led Ecko to tell that particular story…unless Ecko “sensed/knew” Michael had committed the murders. BUT, when I consider the whole “matrix-like” theory I’m still hanging on to, then Ecko’s comments might make more sense due to the fact their minds have been connected for a long time…ie, maybe some of their thoughts/fears are starting to “leak” out of their own minds into others subconscious’.
As far as Michael is concerned…he’s not gone from the island yet. I’m sure he’ll be back next season.
