Reviews…ah, we authors wear our nails to the quick waiting for those first reviews of our latest book to come through. Then when they come and they’re good, we breathe a very heavy sigh of relief as the happiness kicks in. LOL! If they’re not so good, I’d be fibbing if I said they don’t sting, but the constructive ones at least tell us what didn’t work for that particular reviewer.
You’re probably wondering what this blog subject header has to do with reviews? Not-so-great reviews are inevitable. You can’t please every person all of the time. BUT what’s super cool to me is when you get a review for one book from a person that wasn’t very good and then lo and behold you see that same reviewer review another book of yours down the road and YEY, they LOVED that book! What that tells me is that I was given a second chance by the reader, making that “great” review mean even more to me!
For readers or authors (who are readers, too
) reading this blog post, if a book doesn’t work for you, do you typically give that author a second chance?
Lately, I’ve been swamped getting ready for RT this week. Almost done…NOT! RT is the Romantic Times conference and it’s a great conference for readers and authors and industry folks alike. It’s 5 days of networking, chatting, parties, pitches, classes and in general GREAT fun! So I’ll be kinda quiet starting next week! Then I’ll be back (said in my best “Arnie” voice
).

I do! I know not every book is an author’s best work. Plus, we all bring a certain world view to our reading. A particular book might hit me in a bad place, but I might really enjoy the author’s next work.
Although if the writing is bad, like bad grammar, awkward dialogue, generally bad plotting. Eh…then I might need some convincing. I’m a generous reader, but critical and kinda picky to boot.
But of course I’d give an author a second chance.

Hey Anya, *waving*
Yey! I’m glad to hear you give second chances. It’s true that the book might be the author’s best work. We all learn the more books we write!

Oh - and I always give authors a second chance - besides, I have such a bad memory for names I couldn’t keep track of all the books I didn’t like anyhow, lol!

Absolutely, I do. Just because I may not enjoy one book of an author’s does not mean I would never enjoy this author’s works. I find my tastes and interests change and expand as I read a larger variety of books and authors; I also know that sometimes I enjoy certain characters in a book more than others which draw me to certain novels and series more than others and I believe that once in a while even certain locations or settings will draw my interest as they might be familiar or places I am interested in knowing more about.
