The words count!

I was surfing the blogs and saw Miss Snark did an interview with The Writing Playground. Checking out her snarkiness, I saw this interesting question and response…

PC: If you could give newbie writers one piece of advice about writing they would have to follow, what would it be?

MS: Write 1,000,000 words before you query an agent.

1,000,000 words? Sheesh, that sounds like a lot, which got me to thinking…how many words HAVE I written in four years? (I started seriously writing in 2002).

Being the ever-curious person I am, I checked out my published books and uncontracted or partial books and did a talley. OMG, I’d written 850K words in four years…and that didn’t include various works I started in the early stages of my writing, one of which was an 80K historical novel. LOL!

Interesting excercise, I must say. If you’re an author reading this blog, where do you fall in this 1M word range?

  1. I’m sitting somewhere around 700K. I have several partials that haven’t made it into the computer. (I wrote them when there were floppy discs. ) I guess I better get to work so I can hit that last 300K. Although, if rewriting counted, I could say with sincerity that I passed 1 mil mark a LONG time ago. LOL!

  2. Huh, I’ve already written 1,000,000 and then some. Wonder if I get her 1mil award?

  3. I have NO idea, lol.
I suppose it would be about a million, heck, my Alexander series was seven books each over 100k - yikes!
